I've always been intrigued by the concept of playing one-handed duple, triple and quadruple strokes. I used to see Joe Morello doing this, and after studying with him for six years, I was still intrigued. I would ask him how he was executing the strokes to which he responded, "I'm not really doing anything." He showed me that he was just keeping the stick in motion by moving back and forth with the wrist.
In this 5-Minute Lesson, notice in the left hand, using Traditional Grip, how I'm rotating the wrist back and forth; towards me and away from me. In the right hand, I'm using the fingers in a push-pull fashion; opening and closing the fingers to keep the stick in motion.
