Title: Syncopated triplets - A good book?
Post by: Big Yummy on May 14, 2015, 11:11 AM
Can anyone recommend a good book of exercises for practicing triplet variations?

Could you provide a little more information?

By variations do you mean grooves, fills, rhythms, stickings or what?

For the latter, which you would then have to get creative and apply in whatever fashion you wish,  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1892764040/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1892764040&linkCode=as2&tag=drummercafe-20&linkId=Z2QBQ5QVQSCKGZP2]Stick Control  and  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1934638250/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1934638250&linkCode=as2&tag=drummercafe-20&linkId=YGQV2VEA3NVAUS6M]Developing Dexterity  both contain and make use of triplets, their sticking variations and augmentation (eg. flams).

I just spent a lot of time with "The New Breed".  I was hoping to find something similar with a triplet feel (not straight time interpreted as broken 1/8ths). Should I be asking about syncopated 6/8 instead of triplets?

Ah, okay. No, you are right ... triplets, 6/8 or 12/8 is all good descriptions. To the ear, they sound the same; it is on the written form the makes the distinction actually. One could argue phrasing also is affected, but that's another discussion.

I'll get back to you with some suggested books (there are several) once I get the links together.
