I think it's time to think about the community solo 3!!!

I can't believe how time flies! I was just thinking about the community solo the other day. I've doing a lot of behind the scenes work here at the Drummer Cafe during my "spare time" and noticed that it's about this time each year that we have the
Drummer Cafe Community Solo.

One humble request for the loop: Maybe dumb it down if possible compared to last years? I would like 1/4 notes on a cowbell? :P well, maybe not that dumbed down ;D

I got one of those new Zoom H4 handy recorders for 300 bucks. It comes with the Cubase LE software. Pretty good value!

Sounds like fun. I like the one posted a lot. I'm not that good. hahah It would be a fun challenge though. How many of you sat down, brainstormed, and wrote out your solo as opposed to just improvising it?
Bart is there a way I can get an MP3 of the solo posted in this thread? I'd like to listen to it on my phone for a week. My new drum kit should be here within a couple weeks and I was already planning on setting everything up to record when they arrive.

Just speaking for myself, I played through with the loop about 3 times to get a feel for what I wanted to do, then turned on the recorder and played about 3 times through. Listened back, picked my favorite of the 3 (which happened to be the last time), and sent it on.
If I can figure out how to use this 16 track Korg recorder my guitar player brought over I would like to try this time.

I don't think that you have to use anything like what I am talking about.
It is just all I have access to right now. I am sure that a Pro tools program or maybe even a small MP3 recorder might work?

I just use a cheap mic going into my PC and record a wav file.
I listened to the track several times, then sat down and worked out what I wanted to do, then did about a dozen takes until I had a decent take.
For some reason this has passed me over everytime. Not this time, I'm in!

Just make the loop longer then. The last one was what?--just under 4 mins? So run it to 6 mins (or longer ;D) and let everyone have a shot. The #2 was amazing!! Great fun to hear everyone's different playing styles,yet meshed together in one song.

Actually, the loop was much shorter than that in it's original form. Each person records their part, within a limited time frame, and then it is put together with the loop repeating as long as necessary depending on who all participates and how long it is needed. If enough people get involved, it could be 20 or 30 minutes or more. There is no limit since the loop just repeats.

We maybe have to consider to play something like 16 measure of solo for each member, in order to give the opportunity to everyone... But that is my opinion.... Bart will give us some details soon.....

I'm interested as well. The first battle is figuring out how to record to my computer. The second battle is getting them to sound half-way decent due to the terrible acoustics and having only one mic. Last battle is playing something half-way decent to submit. :P

I'd like to contribute something. I've never really shown the DC community anything that i've done before and i'd finally like to share what I can do. I'll just need the loop in MP3 format and i'll be good to go.

I've wanted to join in on the last two but between not having a good means of recording and being very intimidated about others hearing my playing I procrastinated just long enough to miss out. SO I really want to do this. I can now record to my IPOD so no excuse there. My only problem will be finding the time - work is wacko now. Anyway, count me in and if I flake, I'll do some penance by re-reading all of posts from 2003. Bart, if all of us come through, you are going to be a busy man!
In what format do we submit our final clips? I think I could use my dad's recorder and mics (he plays guitar and sings), burn it to a CD and upload it on my computer or something....

Instead of using the same old Cowbells, I used my Gankogui ... which are basically African Cowbells, although never intended to be used on a cow; it's just an instrument.

I don't know if it's just me, but I've tried downloading the clip three times and playing it with both Winamp and Audacity, and there is a significant wow and flutter on the bells. Also, there is some distortion on the track.
Aside from that, I think I could hear that it was decently simple, and something I'd be happy to play to.

It must be your system; there's nothing wrong with the file or the loop that I can hear. I recorded this in Pro Tools, burned it as a 128bit, 44.1kHz file. I just downloaded the file I posted and listened through my laptop speakers and my studio monitors; sounds fine to me.
Perhaps your download was corrupted. Try deleting the file, rebooting your computer and downloading the file again.

I don't know if it will work or not, but you can try. Every metronome is slightly different, not to mention the recording device. Chances are it will be fine since the solo is short; there's not enough to get out of phase.
Still curious why you are experiencing a problem when no one else is. Might I suggest that the cowbells have a vibrato to them naturally, and perhaps you are hearing this ... or ... the speakers you are using can't handle the frequencies and/or timbre. Don't know what else to tell you Joe. There's still a chance that when you downloaded the file again, it got corrupted. If you have dial-up, the possibility is even greater. It happens, and it can happen more than once.
I'll just use the click that Audacity has. I know it well, and it ought to be fine---especially for the eight-to-sixteen bar contribution.

Couple ideas crop up that I think I can handle- would be nice to contribute but I have ZERO experience with recording setups, etc. just what is a wave file anyway??? Point is, hopefully others will be able to get me along on this- sounds like a lot of fun and last years example was really cool.

I have really been having fun with this groove too. I might even add just a bit of Louis's favorite to it. My cow bell. I worked with it yesterday and today. Now I need to go through the quick start procedure on this Korg and do it. Looked like a bunch of people on here down loaded it. We shall see. Hey Bart have you recieved any yet?

I thought it was only me. I do believe it is on 1 and Bart is just messing with my mind.
:) The high-pitched cowbell IS on beat 3 all the way through. If you want to think of it as beat 1, you can ... just play your 8 measures or whatever you are going to do with that in mind.

yes, unfortunately, I know it's on the three ... I just have to count more closely now instead of putting it on auto pilot. It's good practice.
*whew*, so I'm also not the only one thrown by this loop... For me, if I stop counting/concentrating for a split second, the accent displaces to the 4th beat of the measure. Makes my lack of experience totally self-obvious. I went through my Igoe "Groove Essentials" poster to see if anything "matches up" with the loop for inspiration, and the only one that even comes close for my little brain is the Calypso one...
And please excuse the n00b question, but just for clarification, this 4/4 loop can be counted as the following, correct?:
|| 1 + 2 3 a4 a:||
(i.e. the clicky/"ghost" hits are 16ths on the 'and' of 1, 'ah' of 3 and 4, and not a triplet feel (16th(?) note triplets?))?

Not quite, but I did send a PM expressing concern some people would have problems with it. The producer of this project assured me he could slide solos to the left or right by two quarter notes and make them fit, and that it wouldn't be an issue.
Or, if you wish, we could have many solos with lots of unintentionally cool beat displacement! ;)
Perhaps you could think of the loop as outlining a half-time feel ... with the backbeat on 3.
Personally I wouldn't get too absorbed as to where be one is with the loop. Listen for the pulse, which is the cowbell, and solo for _____ measures. I guess if you are needing the loop to keep track of your phrasing then you'll run into problems. If that is the case, then this is a very good exercise for you. It will help to get you to hear and feel phrases in your playing.

Heh... I actually was more inspired by last years, as I was doing some triplet and non-4/4 time signature exercises, and "grok"ed the loop right when I heard it -- I just didn't have enough motivation and time to actually record.
This year's loop makes me go "uhhh... wha?" mostly because of the accent on 3, and definitely takes me out of my comfort zone (which in an of itself is NOT a bad thing..) Unless some latent lightbulb goes on above my head, I have a feeling I'm going to end up displacing the measure forward a quarter to put the accent on the 2nd beat, come up with some straight ahead groove variations, displacing each back a quarter and see if anything "catches" via trial-and-error. I also tried ignoring the "ghost" notes, leaving the main accent on 3, to see if I was inspired to come up with anything, but got nada/zilch/zip that worked when listening back with all the original notes.
Wish I had more experience with syncopated accents and whatnot so I'd "get" this one, but we'll see...

Bart, I just want to say all of this is a great exercise. I've been thrown a few strange sketch tracks with odd percussion loops on occasion. Sometimes '1' isn't even stated. Like you say, you have to hone in on the pulse and do your own counting. This is good practice for the guys who want to do studio gigs!
I literally smacked myself on the forehead in a "duh" moment when I read your half-time feel interpretation suggestion. Guess I didn't get as much out of Billy Ward's "Big Time" DVD as I should have :-X. A 59bpm metronome setting will also be good practice for me. Gosh, there's so much

If it helps anyone, I've not even thinking of the track as a strict 4/4. It's just a pulse as far as I'm concerned. I've tried 6/8 stuff with it and it fits well. Won't tell you what I've been working on, though, because I don't want to build false expectations. LOL The names of the rhythms I'm playing are probably more impressive sounding that my actual execution.

Don't know what I'm going to be able to come up with yet but I think I finally "get" the 3rd beat cowbell thing. To me its not unlike listeneing to the opening of "Can You Feel it" by Phil Collins. Maybe I should be ashamed but I just can NEVER get the down beat of 1 on the percussive opening of that song till some of the other instruments begin play as well. Its a "feel" thing to me. I can count fine and all but it sure is a lot easier when I can simply FEEL the beat of the song as well.
Looking forward to the challenge and have been told this should all be do-able setting up and recording at church.
If I were to want to submit a percussion piece as well should I send 2 seperate pieces keeping in mind a total not to exceed 16 measures or would it be better to have 1 piece as a mix of drumkit and percussion?

I was sitting on a plane between two people today, and fresh out of reading material, no sticks. Heck I was done in about 20 or 30 minutes :D I hate traveling cause then I can't practice on my kit. But it was cool cause it got me thinking and not just noodling- although I did that a bunch and listened to the play back. Some of the things were cool and some stunk up the studio something fierce.
I left some room for improvisation within my written solo ;D Marked it *Shred at warp speed* LOL No, just "toms"

No, I am not writing anything out. I down loaded the rhythm track and burned it to CD and ran it through my PA and started timining my solo for 30 seconds. I have just about got what I want to do figured out.
If I have to write what I am going to do for 30 seconds to remember it, I am in serious trouble.
I do play by feel but I am also counting.
Now I just have to figure out the Korg D16XD extended Definition digital recorder. I have been working on it too.
I am going to start trying to record it tomorrow.

Nope, i'm going improv with mine too. First challenge is convincing my dad to let me use his recorder :) From there ill practice a few times, burn the one I like, and I'm done. Sounds so simple. ;D
Nutty, the 1600 manual is pretty easy to navigate, at least the version I have. Mine came with a dvd that helps also. I have the old D 1600, no extended def. here.
If you have any q`s, I might be able to supply some a`s ,send them to my msn.
Heres a readers digest version.
I set mine up with 6 mics., one per channel.
Set record mode to input. Assign a channel to each input.
Leave one and two open so you can bounce down the recorded channels before burning to disk. do a pre fader check,set the levels,you want to set the gain to a point just under clipping.Switch to post fader to see where the level actually is. You may have to do a couple of scratch recordings to tweak you levels
When you are happy with the levels, record.
When you have hit on a take that you like, set record mode to bounce, record to tracks 1 and 2.
You should have two channels ready for burning to cd.
I like to pan the channels that have the toms, bass and snare dead center.
I wouldnt worry about any effects.
You could mess with the eq`s if you feel inclined.

I have never been refered to as "an experienced pro". I am humbled by that statement. I am in no way ever going to play at the level of Bart or Mr. A or a Chrisso or Bermuda and many more on here. Those guys are the real pros and it looks like you are on your way to being one of those pro level drummers. I just do this because I love it. Good luck with your recording.

Thank you Drumodad for offering your help. It is nice that Cafe members do that for each other. Good News. I successfully recorded it about 8 times today. I am still trying to get the hang of mic placement and levels.
I am also not satisfied on what I want to do but I am close. So anyway, I still have a bit of time. What this cummunity solo has done for me is truly a blessing. I am learning how to use this piece of equipment and yesterday I found out that since I am on the Praise team at church my studio time is free. There is a pro studio there that operates every day.
The director told me to bring him the Korg after I have recorded it and he would dump to his system and mix it down for me for free. HE HE, I get to learn some more. This is exciting!!!

No, you don't need to mix it to the loop hannah, just mix your drum levels *if you want*
Usually my stuff is already mixed at the time of the playback, so it's no big deal. But everyone works a little differently with the gear and style in how they record.

Well we don't have much of a setup to work with- there will be several microphones that I assume I'll be able to use- other wise it will be one picking up the whole she'bang and that'll have to do. It'll be a good experience either way
I got my 16 measures recorded today. Now I just have to figure out how to only use what Bart asked for. Man, I am learning something completely new. I would like to be able to do what I need to do from here?

I knew you would be getting in. I even talked one of the drummers from church into registering with the Cafe,(the more the better) and invited him over yesterday to try to lay one down with my equipment and he was having problems with hearing 4/4 time in that Rhythm track with the high cow bell pulse being one. I guess he played with it for about and hour and a half and I recorded it and let him listen to it back but he wasn't happy with it. If I can get him back here Friday we may get one more in there.
I really thought with the response, we would have had a bunch of Cafe members in on this one. It is still not over yet??

I would just download "audacity" for free and plug in two PZM's or something. You don't have two drum mics? Does anybody you know have a little mixing board and a few mics? Doesn't Winblows have a sound recording program?
Burn the loop to a cd, put on some headphones, click off 4 and lay something down. Then just save and email. Heck, I'd do it right where you are sitting!

I had mine in 24bit too but when I took the Korg to the studio and we dumped it to his Mackie he put it back to 16 bits but the sound quality was very good still. There are folks on here that will probably use two mic's and a computer like what Felix is talking about. Surely Gadd there is another way?

just like taxes, I wait til the last minute.
Should be done on Thursday this week. Don't know exactly what its going to be like quality wise, I just found out that it'll have to be recorded analog then converted to digital. The church is considering purchasing a digital board with recording capabilities, I'd seen many CD recordings of sermon's, etc. and so thought we had one already...apparently... I was wrrrr...

I was swamped with work the last few weeks so kind of wrote this off but low and behold, and deadline extension - man I love extensions!! So I sat down tonight and actually tried to record something. But this is proving more difficult than I expected. I'm just getting familiar with my recording stuff - getting a decent sound - and then actually trying to come up with something that I won't be completely ashamed of. Yikes and that cowbell on three. If nothing else this is a great lesson/exercise and I'm already happy it's forcing me to stretch. "Lord willing and the creek don't rise" I may actually get something done tomorrow night in time for the show.
I skipped a couple of pages..but was wondering are you guys playing to the same fixed tempo..Is there some thing that is set up for you to play to?

Personally I wouldn't get too absorbed as to where be one is with the loop. Listen for the pulse, which is the cowbell, and solo for _____ measures. I guess if you are needing the loop to keep track of your phrasing then you'll run into problems. If that is the case, then this is a very good exercise for you. It will help to get you to hear and feel phrases in your playing.

Just count out loud along with it. Start on "three" when you hear the high cowbell ("THREE, four, one, two, THREE, four. . .").
When you count, accent the "three" when you say it. After a few bars you'll feel it fall into place.

I understand Dave. I already sent mine in and it didn't have the rhythm track with it. As long as it is in 4/4 time it will still work. The only difference is my cymbals will hit on 3 instead of one. I am not sure how that is going to work out but Bart said you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If he tracks the first cymbal hit on One it will still work.

I went back and listened to it and counted it that way and it still works just fine. You had me a bit worried there? I was trying to record one for another drummer and it was the way he was hearing it too. For some reason it just felt right and being me it do most of my drumming completely by feel.

I finally got a mic hooked up to my computer and got it working. Yeah, only one lousey mic. :) Anyway, the soonest I could possibly get something recorded is this Friday. Is that past the due date? Then again, after I listened to the little bit of test recording I did it might be in my best interest NOT to contribute. ;D
Go ahead and keep the solos coming. I've already started mixing, but I can add additional solos as we I go. I've been very busy with other gigs and sessions, so I haven't even recorded mine own solo yet. You definitely have through the weekend ... so I need them by June 4th now.

I agree agogobil,
Dave from Chicago is in the middle of construction so he pulled a few drums out and did it with his hands. Now that is determination. I am sorry Dave, that I let the cat out the bag but I have to say, it takes guts.
I am really looking forward to hearing everyone. Bart has extended the deadline twice. I will bet we have a great turn out this year?

WhoooHOooo!!! After several hours of recording myself and feeling pretty bad about my ability to play to the loop I'm done. Here it comes Bart and all with my own special sense of time (ahhhhh)..... Hey and it's not even midnight here. :)
I need to say Thanks to Bart and everyone here for inspiring me to get this done. It became a much bigger job than it could have been because I wanted to finally play with my mics/mixer and IPOD recording. After finally getting it sounding half way decent (no where near where I want) I then had play something and honestly I had a hard time. BUT I'm actually happy with the result and I've learned a ton just going through the exercise. Again thanks Bart.....
Eardrum- though I didn't do any of the mixing, setting mic levels, etc. I too felt that all in all, in the end this was a very worthwhile experience. My music minister helped with my recording (working with substandard components, pretty outdated, etc.) setting mics and levels then turned on the tape recorder (yes thats cassette tape thankyou very much) which id part of the system and said I'll see you later. I recorded many takes some because I mesed up and others because I had a different idea on what could be done. That led to other retakes due to mistakes because I found that my mind has a highly exaggerated opinion of my own playing- thinking it possible for me to accomplish things that my arms and legs say, "yeah...right, whatEVVVVER", to.
End result- several dozen attempts and about 5 that I really thought were my best; 3 on kit (Hot Rods, for a change and a little different texture, I like the playing with hands idea can't wait to hear that, bass, snare, hats and a couple crashes) and 2 on percussion (2 congas, tambourine, sizzle cymbal and bar chimes- not all that I have just what I had played for the take I sent to Bart). I'm not a chops monster with blazing speed- but what I put together was pretty representative of how I like to play. Whats good about this (community solo, not MY contribution per se) then is that with so many contributions we can really get a sense of the endless possibilites that can exist. That can in turn inspire more creativity and whalla- growth!

Ditto! I hear Weckl/Gadd/Ringo/Moon/Erskine/etc but alas....... and our arms and legs must have gone to the same attitude adjustment seminar.

Reminds me of the saying "the mind is willing but the flesh is weak." I know I sound just like Buddy Rich in my mind, but on tape it's a whole other ball game.

Looking forward to it. It is going to be a banner year. Bart said that he had already doubled the number last year two weeks ago. We must have some that haven't posted that said they were in? I would bet that a few more come floating in..???There is a few more days!!

Wow, Three seperate threads on the solo. I got to talk to Bart in the chat room the other day and he said there were somewhere around 15 or so solo's ;D. Going to be the best turn out yet 8).
