Hey guys, I just found this live video of the Dave Matthews Band. It starts out with a really nice bass solo and turns into a nice soft song. The reason I'm posting is because when Carter comes in at 2:50 hes playing a shaker and a beat at the same time. I Cant explain it very well but you guys should all check it out:

Looks to me like it takes an extreme amount of coordination and its definitely something I'm going to be working on.

Yes Carter Beauford is definitely one of my favorite drummers. He is so clean and has amazing chops, he is a really talented and full drummer!

I didn't watch that video as I had to download a plug in and just didn't feel like it but there are plenty of videos of him on youtube like seen here http://youtube.com/watch?v=wQ6pvkv1GLc

oh yeah i forgot to mention that you needed an Xvid codec to view it, my bad.

I do this a lot, playing percussion while playing a drumkit (or vice versa).

My suggestion is to emerse yourself into the world of percussion ... then when you bring two different elements together it takes less time to merge them. If you've played shakers before, really played them, then I don't think it will much time at all to incorporate them into the drumkit. Suddenly your percussive vocabulary is expanded; doubled, tripled, etc.

I always have a small box of percussion (shakers, rattles, etc.) with me on all my drumset gigs.  8)

I found the same video on you tube for those who don't have the Xvid Codec
