It takes a bit for everyone to come in, the first verse is guitar and vocals only. There's ONE instance of profanity in the bridge, for those of you who are sensitive to such things.
I used my Hart Dynamics E-drums, Roland TD-20 Brain, with the vexpressions LTD Timeless Timber kit.
I'll post one of the uptempo songs, once we finalize a mix.
PDXtaco - Nice country tune! I'm with felix, it's not my cup of tea, but it's done well. Are you using rods? Nice choice to compliment the acoustic.
Donelk - The 3 of you definitely hit your stride by the third song. You and the bass player have a nice solid feel. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the guitarists' style, but once he tuned up, it sounded pretty good.
I dislike Real Media with a passion, so I missed out on dmcc's offering.
Felix's playing is cooler than that kid's hair...nuff said.
(that really is a nice snare, I wish it was clearer in the mix)

The singer's got a great voice, but he could use a little polish. He tends to move around a lot, tapping feet and moving in and out from the mic. It's great when we're performing, but not so desirable in the studio. I'm working with him on that.
Spot on with the guitar. I'm not crazy about mixing piano with electric guitar, especially since a keyboard piano sound is always perfectly in tune, and a guitar...isn't. It's the arrangement and sound that they want, though, so I'll let them have it for now.
I keep hammering it into their heads that if you lay down a sub par track, the final mix is only going to make it worse, not better. They're starting to improve, but sometimes it's like splitting hairs. ::)

I kinda like it raw anyway. In the right studio, they can take Chicken Sh#$ and turn it into Chicken salid sometimes. Even speed tempo's with out changing pitch, bend notes that were flat. Effects, Compression, cover stuff up with reverb or something, etc, etc. It shows the true you. Anyone that plays Zeppelin is OK with me.

I don't know where to host music, only pictures and since I did a personal on myspace instead of a band profile I can't do it that way. I am also dumping my web site soon. It is on there but my web designer didn't label the song which is one of the reasons I am going with a different web guy. If you go to my web site and go to "Music Of the Day",
you will see two songs that have no label. One of those songs is Allan Parsons,
"Wouldn't Want to be like You". It was done in one take. Or give me a good host site and I will post it tonight?

Last night I was a guest soloist at a concert near Atlanta with a rehearsal big band. They're mainly a group of talented semi pros and band directors. They do a decent job, the crowd was good, and it was nice to perform with them. This is part of my introduction into doing stuff like this guest performer thing, and we probably had about 40 total minutes to work on this. I'm not ready for big time sitting in yet with the very best big bands, so this kinda gig will suit me for the time being for sure. Actually I'm still mainly a combo person, but I do like big bands too.

Well Chris, I'm not so sure that's entirely true. Respectfully, after all when my solo was over during part 3, I didn't just walk off and have the guitar player finish the piece. this thread as well. Moreover, since I'm primarily known as a technician type, more people seem to want to know the various ways you handle your left hand, trad grip, hi-hat possibilities, etc. If I were Steve Gadd (which I'm not even close to being), or most appropriately here
you, with a large body of work, then certainly you might see something else. Otherwise, why?

Mattjazz, with all due respect, previously all you ever did here was post your gobbledy gook videos (my opinion, you probably would hate my solos if you heard them yourself- no big deal).
You really don't help other people out here / aren't an active member here- that's ok in my opinion also. But when you come back with a post like you just did- that's just ego man, whether you know it yet or not. You come off to me as having a big ego- in your playing and posting and then put in a line about humility? I don't buy it. That's ok though 'cause that's where you are at right now. Really, it's ok and who you are as a player, that is actually cool.
So if Chrisso ain't digging your stuff, so be it. This place is about opinions. He does not have to post anything about his playing either- the man knows what drumming is about and has probably played drums for about 2 of your lifetimes.

Matt, I think the biggest problem is that one never gets the sense that you feel you have anything to LEARN from being here. You've lectured us on speed, drum corps, what jazz is and who stole it from whom, and have shown us umpteen videos of you soloing. But I don't remember you asking any questions, or starting any discussions that indicated a thirst for knowledge. Instead, I only see your eagerness to show us what you've got.
You're still in your teens, right? You have here at the Cafe a whole bunch of people who have been playing drums professionally longer than you've been alive. In cases like mine, MUCH longer than you've been alive.
You're a talented drummer. You've got good hands, okay feet, and some knowledge. Guess what? There's more to drums. LOTS more. And a ton of it is accessible to you right here, if you ever stop to listen. Or ask questions. Or maybe just read some posts and absorb some knowledge.
Believe me, I respect talent, and do NOT think that only older drummers know what's going on. Tony Williams played some of his greatest stuff in his teens - stuff most of us (myself included) STILL can't touch.
That was Tony. You're not Tony. Not even close. Neither am I, all these years later. But my point is, I'll cut some slack to a teenager with Tony's skills. A guy like that can get in my face. But you can't - you haven't earned the right, and your playing is not enough to earn that right. And I suspect I'm not alone in feeling that way.
You've clearly spent some time studying the great drummers. Here's a tip: study not only their playing, but their behavior. I've never heard Steve Gadd or Vinnie Colaiuta say ANYTHING cocky or disrespectful. EVER. And those are guys that certainly could back it up with their playing. In fact, other than a VERY few artists, I think you'll see that sort of thing just isn't done. Why? Guys that good don't NEED to be cocky - their playing speaks for itself.
You play well. For a teenager, you play VERY well. But you're not in a league of your own, so stop acting like you are, and you'll get along with people a LOT better.
My two cents. I wish you well. It's clear that you're passionate, and I respect that. But you need to emulate the grace of the pros, not just their playing. Buddy Rich might have been arrogant, but he was Buddy Freaking Rich. You're not. Nor am I.
That's why every time I log in at the Cafe, I do so looking forward to what I might LEARN. Not just what I might teach somebody else.
Give that attitude a try, and you might have a better time here.

I have been playing since 1964. Like Keith, I look forward to spending time at the Drummer Cafe. The main reasons I hang out at the Cafe is to enjoy myself. But this board has been around awhile and reputations tend to die hard. Your initial reception here was ... not smoothly received. You had some strong comments to make in defense of WFD. Admittedly, many of us just won't have it no matter what the context, and I still think you are an exception to the WFD rule -- you have good musical chops, not just great single strokes (or whatever). But the point is you crashed here with an opinion that was not very popular, and you left with a small chip on your shoulder about it. You really needed to engage people here more before coming back with your clips. That's just board dynamics. You haven't given people much of a chance to get to know you outside of your clips, and relationship is tantamount to trust. I know there's more to you than all of this, but no one but me around here has had much of a chance to see it.
FWIW, I've exchanged some e-mails with Matt and some posts on another board, and I think he's a really good guy. He's worth interacting with and giving him a chance to see if your perceptions are worth holding on to. If I lived anywhere near him, we'd probably be good friends.
Chris, dude, I know you've got a good point to make, but this thread sort of begs solos and showy doesn't it? The spirit of the comment struck me as having a little bitter edge to it, and not constructive like you usually are. Also, almost all of Matt's performances so far have been in the jazz and big band category, very normal for someone on a high academic track in this country. Maybe when he gets out of college and starts playing for pay we'll get to see what he can do with 2&4. In the meantime, I won't hold it against him for showing us his highlights from a big show like this.
From what I read of Chris's comments, which make perfect sense to me, it would be nice to see more of how you play the band, how you shape an arangement and enable a band to play better than it would without you.
Anybody can, with a little work, blaze. Using this instrument to make the music better is another thing.

Considering he's considered to be not older than me, he seems well "directioned", technique-wise.
How large is the big band piece in question? If very long, that's a reason for highlighting a solo (or in this case two lol). I personally enjoyed the second solo, it was fun.
But I love jazz drums at any part of the song, and I think that a regular part of the song would also be great for showing his skills. The feel!
Mattjazz might be learning a lot from the forum! I read several times more than what I choose to write/type/post about. I hope he is, I hope we all are.

While I have not read much from Matt on drummercafe, I have read a lot of Matt's posts on other web sites and FWIW, I agree 100% with the above observations. In the threads I have read elsewhere Matt was gracious beyond his years. Just my experience. Regardless of what odd threads I find interesting outside drummercafe, I always come back. Drummercafe is my absolute favorite on-line drum forum. I hope Matt finds his comfort zone here and settles into this great community.

I am guessing it's dependent on pre-sales, but that the moment they are going quite well so who knows... I would really like to do the US & OZ dates even if it's only 5-7 shows each, I have never been to ether country & have always wanted to...

This was a performance billed under the pianist's name. We were playing his compositions. The first clip is just a vamp/harmonic figure he gave us before the gig to improvise on. Still just a simple 32 bar thing. So, we do take a few liberties.
Second (and third) clip...part one and two...are of a tune that the pianist composed for a friend who passed away.
Anyway, we had some fun.

Since this is a drum forum it's worth mentioning that we play in a ton of weird time signatures.
Figured I'd post, as I finally have something to share. The band's name is 'Daybreak Desire', and we're four amateur 30-somethings-with-day-jobs that are simply playing for fun. Our http://www.myspace.com/daybreakdesire]MySpace page has 3 original demos we recorded ourselves in December and just had mixed by a local engineer. While rather simple songs (essentially matching our skill levels), we all think they turned out rather well.
For anybody interested, we recorded in our practice space (a AAA storage unit with as horrid acoustics as you'd expect) using the following "pro-sumer" level equipment (I have the original individual tracks if anybody is interested in the "before mix" sounds - PM me, as they are deliberately not publicly available):
- Macbook Pro (late 08 model) using Logic Pro 8
- Presonus Firepod
- Various Shure mics on the drums (Beta 52, SM57, KSM109s)
- Bass DI'ed out of his amp (I forget the details)
- Guitar DI'ed out of his amp (some smallish tube amp most haven't heard of - Koch, maybe?)
- Vocals into a Sennheiser 835 (hand-held mic for live performance, basically)
Everything was recorded live/together in one take per song, with overdubs for the few guitar solo bits done afterwards. Mixing was done by Tim Dolbear at http://www.eclecticarecordings.com/eclectica-studio.htm]Eclectica Studios . Kick was sample-replaced and bass was re-amped on one due to too much clipping (whoops, guess we layed into it too much after setting the levels too hot). Guitar was doubled/delayed. Everything else was just "cleaned up" with standard compression/etc. techniques.

I was digging through my archives and found some old video footage of me that I thought I'd share.
This was the final piece I performed on my junior recital back on May 4, 1985 (I was 20 years old at the time) at Mary Moody Northen Hall on the campus of, what was then, West Texas State University (WTSU), now known as WTAMU.
"Tambourin Chinois" (Chinese Drum) was original composed for violin by Fritz Kreisler. This arrangement is by legendary xylophonist, George Hamilton Green.
I'm playing on a 4-octave Deagan Xylophone (c.1908) which I no longer own but thoroughly enjoyed; what a beautiful sounding and looking instrument!

Hey Dizz, are those 15" 2002 Heavy hats? I picked up a set a year ago from Donn Bennett and they have become my go-to hats for everything.
No those are just the 14's. But they are great sounding cymbals.
My favorite hi hats at the moment are new style K on top and an old zildjian amir heavy bottom hat cymbal. I say my favorites, but it's not like I had my choice of anything I could get. Those are the favorites of my collection.
I also have a mastersound bottom cymbal but its slightly warped. I dont know what to do with that cymbal. Its not bad for harder hitting playing and foot play, but quiet to moderate levels it sounds a little hollow being slightly warped.
This was our Worship last weekend 6/07/09. Now I normally just play percussion because we have enough drummers but nobody who can play AP. The drummer who was scheduled was at practice on Thurs. that week but was not feeling good. He ended up in the hospital the next day, he is fine now. So Fri night I got the call to cover both drums & percussion. So after switching gears and a little rehearsal before the Sat night service I think it went pretty well. I especially like the acoustic version of " Ole Rugged Cross" 3rd song in.

Tim, do you normally play open like that? I don't normally find open playing as challenging as people seem to make it, but a good feeling shuffle is a different matter entirely. That thing felt GOOOOD.

While looking through the footage on the video camera I found these little snippets from 2007. The band is my old wedding band. I was with them over 18 years (8 pieces with horns). We broke up in 2004 but got together again in 2007 to play this outdoor picnic gig.
No rehearsal, we just called stuff out of the Real Book or played material from our old library. It was nice to play with those guys (and gal) again. We had a good run, averaging 35 weekends a year for 18 years.

Thought I'd contribute with a song that will be on my band's next CD. It's called Arizona Snow and is the recording debut of that funky old Royal Star kit in red satin flame finish that I posted about a while back. These are the basic tracks of each instrument... no editing or processing has occurred yet. Can't wait to get this mixed and polished up.
Somewhat interesting side note: The band leaders wanted to record acoustic guitar, electric guitar and lead vocal to a click first and then have me record my drums to those parts with no audible click. I'm used to playing along with scratch tracks and recording my parts first, but these are not intended to be scratch tracks.
Those cheapo stencil Royal Stars greatly exceeded my expectations! Anyway, here's the link to the song.

The song is really nice Ryan. The drums, as always with your recordings, sound great and fit the song very nicely. You are giving the song just what it needs. As far as the cheapo drums, I think it depends on who is setting them up and the tuning and heads. They sound great. I like her voice and the guitars and bass sound really nice. I am not sure who she reminds me of but maybe a bit Pretenders. I dig the music. Nice work, I mean VERY NICE ;) ;D.

I've had some people comment that the toms sound too dead. Funny thing is, I didn't muffle them at all. The low-end luaun mahogany shells, rounded bearing edges and G2 coated batters over G1 coated resos all contribute to that sound.
I was going for a subdued sound due to the nature of the lyrics of the song... they deal with the suicide last year of our original bassist. So I was looking for something dark and low, and these fit the bill nicely.
Glad you dug the tune. She's been compared to Aimee Mann before and we've heard Pretenders comparisons before as well. I'm just happy to be playing in a band with a singer/songwriter of that quality.

I can't stand Reverb, and your drums sound fine. I wouldn't change anything about them. If you want to add just a hair of reverb to the toms, it won't hurt but I mean just a hair. I like it on just Bass and Snare but what you saw me do in my basement was dry. Just me and music through the PA. I like your sound now. By the way, the snare pop sounds great. I don't know what snare you are using but it sounded nice. Peace to you Ryan.

The snare was the snare that came with that Royal Star set. It's not a Royal Star snare... it has a little round badge that just says Star on it. (Star was also a Tama brand name before it became Tama) It's steel-shelled, 8-lug with regular old triple-flanged hoops. I don't know what the magic ingredient is, but that drum is AMAZING. It's definitely my all-time greatest sleeper drum acquisition.
I don't prefer a lot of processing on the drums either, and probably will leave the drums alone for the most part. Might adjust levels a bit and perhaps a bit of EQ. They had a mic out in the hall outside the studio that was picking up some nice natural ambience. Will probably boost the level of that mic in the mix when it's all said and done.
It was a blast recording that kit. The mojo was oozing out of them and I'm sure it had a positive effect on my playing. Also, the order of recording helped (actual guitars and vocals instead of hastily laid down scratch tracks) and felt very natural.

OK - an oldie that I hadn't heard in years - stumbled onto it YouTube (but found a better sounding link on another site).
First let me say I've always been a huge fan of Oingo Boingo - and consider John "Vatos" Hernandez's work with them to be some of the most under-rated and under-appreciated ever.
That said - for those that don't know before Oingo Boingo, there was a larger, more theatrical group called The Mystic Nights of the Oingo Boingo.
And though I knew several of the members (and was very good friends with guitarist, Steve Bartek) I really never played with either group... except this one session.
Sort of at the end of the first group, they recorded a single - sort of a '50's do-wop song that lyrically dealt with the infamous Patty Hearst kidnapping event from back then (this was 1976ish).
So Steve called me to come to this funky little studio in North Hollywood - that looked to be right out of the 50's - and cut "You've Got Your Baby Back (The Ballad of Patty Hearst).

These clips are from the summer 2009 Bottle Band shows. The Bottle Band is a musical comedy group I perform with that performs music on bottles filled with different levels of water. The performances include bad jokes, droll humor, sight gags, and funny (often very clever - check out "Baseball, Joy of Fan's Desiring" below) musical arrangements. Our performances raise money for charitable groups.

Here is a rough mix of a song called "World of Demons" that I did with my old buddy, Bob Crerie. Bob and I have been playing together since 1979. He did all of the tracks except for the drums and asked me to lay down the drum tracks. I kept them pretty straight-forward as the other instrumentation is busy enough to carry the song. We recorded it at another friend's house, Mike Terpak, who I have known since 1964. The drum tracks are "live", untouched by the meddling hands of any computer software.

The hi-hats are 15" 2002 Paiste Heavy Hats (from 1978; they stopped making the Heavy Hats in the 15" size).

Oh, there's also a Meinl Hi-hat tambourine on the hat-stand as well (it's the one that I raved about in "new gear" last year.

Last Fall I got to play with the Video Games Live Orchestra. Two shows in Philly at The Kimmel Center and one at The Beacon Street Theater on Broadway in NYC...here's a good audience video from youtube... very cool experience, videos screens, lights, lasers, etc......I'm in the shadows playing drums and percussion on the left hand side of the stage.

Yeah...it was a crazy gig...had know idea what I was walking into..the fans of the video game music are VERY passionate!! Hope I get to do it again!! Loads of fun.

BASICALLY:
I was recently contacted and asked to play in a group being put together for an "all year reunion" (basically graduates from the 1940s through 2010) at my high school. The group was to consist of other alumni as well.
We were asked to kick off the program the other night.
While one might not believe it from hearing me, we actually had a very good music program for a small school in the sticks.
I had known and had played with some of the other players before, but also got a chance to meet some folks I had not known previously.
We are all pretty well geographically dispersed so we only managed to have one rehearsal, so I in these clips see myself as doing more reading than "playing" (it sounds like it too) but that is how it goes.

Night in Tunisia
This is an arrangement by Abe Silverman, the sax player in the group, whom I've had the pleasure of recently meeting and playing with. Abe has been a working NYC musician since the late 50s, prior to that he was stationed in Cuba with the US Navy (pre Castro) so he played with all of the great Cuban players in Havana before they came here. For years Abe has had his own big band here, a couple of years ago his drummer was Ignacio Berroa, now it is Steve Little who played with Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Igor Stravinsky. Abe is a treasure trove of stories from the Big Apple's Jazz heyday. He is still going strong as you'll see. There are some decent grooves during the solos.

Sing Sing Sing- Always cautious about tackling a signature piece like this....
This went OK, it was the last song we were able to play, and you'll see my solo end very abruptly (and awkwardly) because the organizer of the event was frantically waving his arms telling us we'd gone over the time limit (because he started things way too late). I'm definitely no Gene Krupa so I was just trying to capture the spirit of what he played. Anyway when I got the hook I just played the first thing that came into my head, then back into the tune. I didn't want to copy the GK stuff note for note but I spent a lot of time listening to about 5 different versions on my ipod so I would absorb the general feeling of things. Kind of disappointing to get cut off like that, we had a few more tunes we pulled from the Real Book that we were going to stretch out on, but thats showbiz.
I later spoke to some people in the crowd out who had actually seen Krupa play that tune live. Had I known that I probably would have opted out of playing it :-)

Thank you very much for the nice comments.
That is a ride cymbal that I got with that kit when I was 10 (long time ago-back when Charlie's Angels was big in Prime Time :-).
I believe it to be a late 50s A (from the stamp on it). Up until recently when I was preparing for that gig it had the original 8 rivets in it, it created a huge sound but the rivets limited its utility so I hadn't used it much. One day on a whim I removed the rivets and really liked the sound, I can get a lot of different textures out of it....I guess I should have removed them years ago!

Hey, guys. Newbie to the Cafe, here. Figured there wasn't really a better way to introduce myself than to post a video of my current band playing live. This particular video is from the Slave To The Metal Festival that came through our town (Charleston, SC) hosted by Mistress Juliya (from Fuse TV, I think).
This is the opening song. I guess you'll get a good idea of my playing style from this video. Lots of cymbal choking, variations of blasting (given the style of music, I believe I apply them tastefully, lol), and double bass flurries...quartets, I guess. Not triplets.

That kind of drumming has always impressed me. I guess it's because there's so many licks and chops but it's something I never took the time to learn.
I loved Bill Bruford in his Yes and King Crimson Days but once he started doing stuff similar this on his solo albums he lost me. After about a minute I'm bored with the music somehow and after two minutes it's, "Let me out of the room"!
I once saw the Dixie Dregs in Atlanta. Each player was really impressive! But, after twenty minutes I had to cut out, I couldn't take the too frantic and disjointed music any longer. Changes for the sake of changes, forced funk. Just ain't my style.
Still. I'm impressed with what you can play. Your drums and cymbals sound great! I've never heard of that cymbal company. Another sign I might be getting to old for this game.

While at a jam in St. Pete I was approached by a guitar player who wanted me to play on a demo he was recording. The tracks had been laid but he wanted me to replace some of the drum tracks. He gave me a tape to prepare from only when I got to the studio he wanted me to play different songs than what I was to have prepared. A nerve wracking experience knowing I was being recorded yet had no idea where the music was heading. As it turned out on this track it was the same pattern repeated but... I didn't know that at the time. I only wish I had more fusion in my background to "speak" from. I just cranked up the snare and forged ahead. It's the one and only time I heard or played the tune:

Hey Stewart! Long time. Boy, you could fit 2 and a half of my band into yours. That's quite a production.
It also shows a contrast in what can be entertaining.
Yours is a highly polished rehearsed (and very good) act. We on the other hand never rehearse, play once a month and generally have a really good reaction anyway. Of course, we've been playing together forever, so that helps.

Haven't been here in awhile, but a lot has happened since I was here last. Mainly, and the most positive as far as my drumming goes, is that I stopped struggling to be "good enough", and started just having fun. Guess what...I'm having fun.
Here's a live recording of my band, Red Velvet Mojo. We had played a gig the night before this suare and didn't get home until 4AM. Then we had an engagement in the morning at 8AM with a group of musicians who came from as far away as Great Britain and Australia just to jam. It was an amazing day. We were exhausted before we started jamming, but played until after midnight.

Hey Rylie, Diana has two CDs that are virtually drum free. Errand Girl. . comes from the Nat King Cole tribute All For You. I think Love Scenes is the other one that is tracked without drums. Maybe we should start a topic where we can complile a list of "drumless" songs to play with.

Yeah, Diane has put out several albums without drums, just piano, bass and guitar. Look for those kinds of projects ... it's a play-along built right in! We talked about this before on the Drummer Cafe if you want to look for other recording suggestions.
Thanks guys! I love being able to work out patterns, learn new riffs and such with a real "band" without having a bass player roll his eyes or sigh every time I want to do it again. My band doesn't play anything in the jazz genre, unless we're just fooling around at practice and I force them into it, but that never sticks. :)
I'm off to get download those CD's. I really dig Diana's stuff anyway...just never owned any of her music. Until now.
Dig out the brushes and imagine you're Jeff Hamilton. Google some videos of him playing with Diana to get in "the spirit" and have some fun!

Here is a short clip of me playing my tama superstar. I was just testing to see if my computer could handle running windows movie maker and pro tools at the same time. I took the video footage and put the pro tools recorded file over it. I just used a beta 52 and an overhead mic. I was happy with the sound.
Fist stop on our Florida "tour". If a tour is anything with more than 1 gig in a row outside of ones' home state, then we were on tour. Either way, we all had a blast and I think we beat our record for crowd size on both occasions... ;)

Oy, It's been a long dry spell. Too much moving, too many old friendships that needed re-kindling.
Finished a track that will be the soundtrack to a friend's iOS game. I played drums, he played guitar and programmed an old Gameboy for the synth. I did all the recording and mixing and mastering, clumsily, but I must say I'm reasonably pleased with the results.

Hi everybody, I'm new in this forum and I joined with intentions to learn more and to get some validation.
I often hear that people say I'm a very skilled drummer, but I don't really take it seriously because I know there are so many great drummers out there and I can't imagine myself compared to them. I would love to hear what you think of my performance and hopefully get some feedback on what I could practice more on :)

Hey guys! last year I posted a drum video of a track I wrote called "Subconscious" that would become the first song on my debut album "Catharsis" Here I am a year later with the finished product! The album consists of 7 songs two instrumentals and 5 vocal tunes ranging in various styles from jazz, rock, pop, indie, 80's-ish etc haha.... Its all original music I wrote, produced, and mixed myself. I am playing ALMOST all of the instruments (I needed help with the violin & the guitar solos cause I'm not that good at guitar) and I'm even singing...(yea...) BUT anyways here is the link to the last song on the album its an instrumental called "Home" and it features my drumming in a 6/8 groove 8)
