Its the woodblock type sound I'm after.

Anyone know what this instrument might be called?

I finally got the player to work but it sounded ummmmm not good.  I could not tell because of the quality.  Do you have other samples?

oh man "chalo dildar-e-chalo" from pakeezah... classic song from a classic movie.  "thade rahiyo" is another one to check from that film, as well as "chalte chalte."

they just used plain-old temple blocks on those recordings-- the key is the overdriven mic pre's and the insane levels to tape.  bollywood from the 70s wins todays loudness wars, hands down.  Keep in mind that the orhcestras were tracked live and the only real separations were vocals, (maybe) tabla, and then the orchestra, so the temple blocks would have been mic'd from quite far away, and probably with a condenser or ribbon mic.
