A question from the LP novice regarding playback speeds

A couple old LP records I'm playing right now (Gimme The Night by Geo. Benson and Chicago VII) play back at slower speeds than the versions I've heard on the CD, thus sounding a step or so lower in key.  Conversely, Shaft and a Redd Foxx recording sound right on key (or pitch, in the latter case).

Not with a good turntable!  Many tables have a speed adjustment.  It may not be set properly.
