Title: Great/Busy Weekend-Played Live On The Radio/Festival
Post by: TUNELOW on June 09, 2008, 11:39 PM
What a great and busy weekend it was for the Daddy'z Breakdown band.  We played live on 97 WLAV in Grand Rapids on Fri morning.  We were at the station for about 2 hrs, got to play short versions of an original song and one cover, but we got numerous plugs for the band.  Great experience for us, none of had ever played live on a radio station before.  Very cramped quarters, had to set my kit up out in the hallway of the studio.  I brought my small YAMAHA jazz kit, using only fixed aux hats attached to the only cymbal stand with an 18" cymbal.  Used my Steve Smith signature hot sticks, my snare, and bass drum.  Would not want to do it on a regular basis but it was fun.  The entire radio staff was really accomodating to all of us.  Then Sat evening we played the annual Grand Rapids Arts Festival.  Had not played a festival in a few years, had forgotten how fast paced it is.  One band on stage, one band setting up in the wings, more bands waiting to bring gear in.  Set up, play, get off.  We had a great time and the concensus was that we rocked really good.  First song, first lead, one of the guitar players breaks a string, no biggie though except his other guitar was out of tune, minor delay.  It was smokin hot on stage, upper 80's and humid as hell for MI. this time of year.

A band to keep an eye out for is a band some of you might of heard or heard of "The Outer Vibe".  Smokin hi hi energy rock.  A group of younger musicians who were abosolutely fabulous, the drummer was unbelieveable, got to talk to them a little before and after their set, great people.  Juet thought I would share the weekend events with you all.....

Art festivals are a blast to play.  I used to do them all the time.  And yeah, the weather can be funky!

It's funny how the radio basically does nothing for local talent on a continual basis.

One of the best gigs I've played in many years was in the back of an art studio in Minneapolis. It was a garden setting. I played there a few times and loved those gigs. Met many interesting people.  :)
