Roland AARP Life Expo

Exhibit and Workshops at AARP National Event in Los Angeles

Roland U.S. was recently involved with the AARP Life@50+ Expo, held September 22-24, 2011, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In partnership with AARP and the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), Roland and other NAMM member companies joined forces to demonstrate the many benefits that people over age 50 can experience from recreational music making.

The AARP Life@50+ Expo is a lifestyle conference where AARP members attend sessions, try new experiences, make new friends, and learn ways to lead active lifestyles. For the past 10 years, NAMM and its members have made music and music-making opportunities an important part of the conference. This year, approximately 18,000 AARP members attended the three-day event.

A focal point of the conference was NAMM’s Wanna Play? Pavilion on the exhibit floor, which featured performances, musical instrument workshops, a daily drum circle, and more. For the second year, Roland hosted a large, active exhibit adjacent to the pavilion, where attendees had the opportunity to play and explore various Roland instruments and get demonstrations and music lessons from the company’s top clinicians.

Roland’s HPi-7F and FP-7F digital pianos were very popular attractions, and instructor Scott Houston was on hand to offer personalized lessons to all that stopped by. As host of the Emmy®-winning PBS TV series The Piano Guy, Scott is one of the nation’s most prominent piano teachers, with a unique approach that makes learning the instrument easy and fun.

Many other Roland instruments were enjoyed in hands-on displays, including the ATELIER® Combo AT-350C organ, various V-Accordion® models, and electronic percussion such as the TD-9KX2 V-Tour® Series V-Drums®, RMP-5 Rhythm Coach®, and HandSonic® HPD-10.

The VIMA® JM-5 Entertainment Module was another big hit at the Roland exhibit, drawing large crowds every day that celebrated the social enjoyment of making music. The attendees had great fun singing along with their favorite karaoke tunes, with folks passing the mic around, jumping in to sing backing vocals, and dancing in the aisles as the music played.

“Our exhibit at AARP Life&50+ is all about having fun with music,” said Richard Schatz, Manager of Music Education & Institutional Sales for Roland U.S. "All of the people that came and spent time with us were ready either to play and sing together or to find out where and when they could learn. This generation of retirees and soon-to-be retirees is ready to show us how to have a Better Life with Music.”
