This educational and entertaining DVD is the first to combine the technical information of recording with actual studio playing/charting techniques used by top pro drummers—all presented in a clear, concise, intelligent, and entertaining format.
Schulman says, "The DVD simply and humorously shows you the complete spectrum of recording drums in the studio: preparation of the equipment, tuning, microphone technique, digital recording, my own quick system of charting songs, creating drum parts, performance, editing, effects, studio construction and some darn great video footage! Oh, and there are some cool performances by yours truly".
Nearly every studio drummer in Los Angeles records his/her own drum tracks in bedrooms, garages and home studios. The days of having an expensive studio and engineer to record drums are virtually gone. The new trend is to be able to record drum tracks yourself. I believe that you need this information in today's changing music industry. This DVD shows you how to do it and reduces your fear of getting started by giving you simple, entertaining and inspiring information. You can start recording right away and have the best time creating top class drum tracks!"
As a master drummer, professional engineer, producer and studio owner Mark is constantly staying on top of his game with a career of studio work, high-profile tours worldwide, and TV appearances with Cher, Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol, Foreigner, Richard Marx, and even filling in for Matt Sorum with Velvet Revolver. He is currently working with Pink.
REVIEW
A Day in the Recording Studio DVD by Mark Schulman, is a 2-hour DVD with a free downloadable, 36-page booklet and play-along tracks which is available on Mark's homepage: www.MarkSchulman.com.
This DVD was intended to be an entry level instructional video to give the beginner drummer, or anyone new to the recording process for that matter, a good foundation and understanding of recording drums. Don't be fooled by my "entry level" comment as Mark as done such a wonderful job with this video that even the most seasoned player is sure to glean a thing or two.
Mark covers the basic concepts necessary for recording a great drum track. Everything from the room, set-up, using the recording gear (mics, mic-pres, EQ, compression, etc.), mic placement, getting sound levels, tuning the drums, making charts, and laying down the drum track. His delivery is light-hearted and humorous; the information and content is well-balanced. Throughout the DVD, Mark always points out that this is A way or his way to approach the recording process; never THE way to do it ... which is excellent and spot on!
Whether you aspire to or actually have your own home studio, even if it's in your bedroom, I think you'll find A Day in the Recording Studio insightful with a lot of sage advice. It's a do-it-yourself guide to recording great drum tracks for drummers and all musicians.
